Mass Effect 3
It's been 6 months since the Normandy was impounded by the Alliance. She had promised Admiral Hackett she would return to face her charges with the honour and commitment she had always shown them. It was understandable, in a way... After all she had worked with a known terrorist group she despised to stop the Collectors from harvesting every human in the Galaxy for the Reapers, and she had also (accidentally) wiped out over 300,00 Batarians when she was forced to destroy their solar system to save the entire Galaxy from an immediate Reaper invasion.
Needless to say, the Alliance weren't all that pleased with her.
Now she was under House Arrest, stuck in Vancouver, under the watchful eye of one very astute Marine who took his job of guarding her quite seriously... Lt. James Vega was also very highly respectful of her, and made her stay more pleasurable than it would have been otherwise.
On one random day, Vega comes to her cabin to tell her that the Defence Committee had asked for her. He doesn't know what's going on, but he needs her to go - now. On the way she then meets up with (now) Admiral David Anderson. Her former captain is in his full dress blues and looks quite serious... and she knows. She knows they're coming.
It doesn't take long for it to be confirmed. To make matters more jarring, she sees Ashley... now Lieutenant Commander Williams... something that unnerves her at first, but then realises she is glad to see her old squadmate again. After Horizon, she wasn't sure how to react... but then Ash smiled at her, and she realised that things weren't as bad as she feared between them.
The same could not be said for the Alliance brass. They had “disturbing” reports... and they wanted to know how they could stop the Reapers. As if they were any old enemy. As if a few extra guns would scare them. Shepard isn't shy about mollycoddling them... she's spent three damned years trying to warn them about this. Now... They had no choice but to listen.
It's not a moment later that the naive Defence Committee finds out what it means to face such an enemy.
The Reapers weren't just coming.
They were here.
